Understanding Newborn Payment
Families who have just had a child or adopted one can also receive the Newborn Upfront Payment. The Newborn Upfront Payment is a Centrelink Newborn Payment and is also a one-time and non-taxable payment made to families who have just had or adopted a child. $295 is to be paid to families or households as added government support to be received in 2025. Along with $295 he Newborn Upfront Payment is added to the family benefits Family Tax Benefit Part A.
Eligibility Criteria
Parents and or guardians who are the principle caregivers of new born and maintain a residency or have a special visa to Australia along with parental leave right with. Payments can automatically go to a Newborn Payment to parents. Newborn Payments will only go to biological as well as adoptive parents. Parents with approved licensed foster care will not be eligible.
Application Process
Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A must be claimed, after which Centrelink qualifies one for the Newborn Payment and its supplements automatically. Claims can be lodged online, with a linked Centrelink and myGov account, anytime up to three months before the expected birth or adoption date. Claims are generally accompanied by proof of birth or adoption and other supporting documents.
Payment Breakdown
Alongside the initial lump sum of $295, Newborn Supplement which is also available and paid over 13 weeks can be received by Newborn Payment families too. The value of the Newborn Supplement is income and number of children in the family determines the number of children in the family. For first children or multiple births (i.e. twins or triplets) families will qualify for higher payments. Families can select to receive the payments either weekly or as a lump sum.

Additional Support
Newborn Payment recipients automatically qualify if they are already receiving FTB Part A. For the same child, those on Parental Leave Pay are excluded from the Newborn Payment.
